Is a mulching mower better than bagging?

For most lawns, yes. When mulching works best, and the few times bagging still makes sense.

For most home lawns, mulching wins. It returns nutrients to the soil, saves bags and time, and cuts down on fertilizer. Bagging still has a place in a few situations.

How mulching works

A mulching blade has extra curves that lift and recut clippings inside the deck. The fine pieces fall between the grass blades and disappear within a few days.

When mulching works best

  • You mow often enough to remove no more than a third of the height
  • The grass is dry when you mow
  • Your blade is sharp, so clippings are cut cleanly

When to bag instead

  • The grass got very long and clippings would smother the lawn
  • You’re collecting material on purpose for compost or garden mulch
  • Weeds have gone to seed and you don’t want to spread them
  • A lawn disease is active and you want to remove infected leaf material

Switching over

Many mowers take a mulching blade or plug kit. A sharp blade matters more than the brand.
